Abstract

Cooperation between municipalities and cities is a hot topic that in recent years has become the subject of both scientific and social debate also in the Czech Republic. A question of fragmented structures of municipalities has been the subject of a political interest since the 19th century. Small municipalities cease to meet the ever-increasing social needs. Especially after the World War II in many countries the small municipalities have become not very functioning administrative entities. The aim of this paper is to analyze the experience of the three selected European countries (Italy, Austria, Switzerland with merging of municipalities and inter-municipal cooperation (via case studies). These countries, which along with France and the Nordic countries are the most often cited as a model of inspiration for the Czech and Slovak Republics. Case studies were created based on the study of relevant literature sources and expert interviews.
