Abstract

Business is an essential part of being of each of us every day. Retail has become not only a place to sell goods and services, but also a place where we spend our free time. In headquarters, retail stores are the most variable elements, they are lively, dynamic and promising constantly changing components, which change the spatial-functional structures of cities the fastest and most significantly. The aim of the paper is to present the most important features of the spatial distribution of food stores, the impact of retail chains entering the city, as well as to outline current trends in the behavior of the population when buying food. In the article, we used data obtained from a field survey, conducted in 2017, as well as from data on stores from the Trade Register of the Slovak Republic, as well as from the available websites of individual stores. In the research, we focused on food stores with a wide range of goods offered (without specialization), as well as on more specialized stores (e.g. bread, meat and meat products stores, etc.) and on the preferences of Trenčín residents in the selection of food stores, as well as to map the state of food stores.
