Abstract

Protection of the agricultural land is much discussed topic. There is soil degradation happening in many states and that leads to decrease or complete loss of quality agricultural soil. One of the consequences of the soil degradation might be an environmental migration - migration of inhabitants of the regions with the low quality of the agricultural soil to the regions disposing with demonstrable higher quality of the soil. There is no study to explore this situation in the territory of Slovakia. Therefore we collected and studied all the available data about the soil quality, withdrawal and movement of the population within selected regions of Slovakia. The results proved increased internal migration of inhabitants of eastern Slovakia into the regions of western Slovakia mostly for purposes of living or industry. Consequence of this situation is quality land withdrawal on western Slovakia for non-agricultural purposes, which leads into the soil degradation.
