Abstract

The densely populated cities with significant cultural potential face challenges in keeping tourism in line with sustainable principles. One option to deal with the negative impacts of tourism on their local environment is to use creative tools. This paper aims to evaluate the importance of creative tools for sustainable tourism in selected Central European metropolises. These tools are assessed based on an evaluation questionnaire. Possible performance gaps are identified. Finally, the results are interpreted in the context of sustainable urban development. The paper is methodically based on methods of analysis, synthesis, description, and comparison. Participatory observation and electronic communication with city representatives are essential for processing the experience of selected cities – Warsaw and Budapest. Each of these cities faces different challenges. However, according to the results, both of them endeavour for the integrated development of suburban areas, to reduce the congestion of central areas and extend the length of stay.
