Abstract

This paper has the potential to provide a significant body of knowledge about the nature and features of the retail network in the Serbian town of Báčsky Petrovec. This town became the center of our attention thanks to the high proportion of the Slovak population living in this area, which is historically connected with the Slovak ethnic group, while the first Slovaks immigrated to Petrovec as early as 1745. The aim of the paper is to answer basic research questions based on the analysis of the spatial and functional differentiation of the retail network of the Serbian town of Báčsky Petrovec: Is the Serbian town with the Slovak population heading towards a market-oriented town? Is this city losing its retail characteristics of the socialist period? There are determinants of the expected onset of the new so-called the concentration stage resulting from the slowly flowing influence of transnational chains? We will answer these questions and the new configuration of the retail system of these places by means of indicators: i) location, ii) store size in m², iii) area parameter so-called PAFS (the Population to the Admissible Floor Space), iv) store assortment (according to NACE classification) in the monitored area. Data were obtained by field passportization in January to March 2020. The paper focuses on the interrelationships between the retail sector and urban structures. We evaluate these ties as the most visible aspect of the post-socialist development of the city of South-Eastern Europe. The work is suitable as a basic information base of the city management Báčsky Petrovec leading to the development of the retail network in the city.
