Abstract

The aim of the paper is to present partial results of research focused on the stratification of consumption in Slovakia. By analyzing the representative database of consumer perceptions and preferences in Slovakia (n=1,012), the authors seek to answer the question: is Slovak society stratified according to consumption? The research results indicate that the Slovak society can be described as a consumer society which takes on consumption patterns determined by global trends. Locations of traditional stores purchases and online purchases preferences were analyzed. The stratification of society can be discussed in selected analyzed aspects of consumption. Consumers in Slovakia prefer large-scale stores, but their share is stratified in the space. A significant preference is oriented in a west-east direction with a decreasing share. The largest share of online shopping is typical for the west of the country and metropolis. Differences between the regions of Slovakia, resp. between different consumer segments have been confirmed.
