Changes in Consumer Behaviour and Demand of the Population of the Slovak Republic for Tourism in 2020 as a Result of the World Pandemic COVID-19

Abstract

At the beginning of 2020, the news about a rapidly spreading epidemic of a new unknown disease, called coronavirus (COVID-19), which was causing severe respiratory problems and in the worst cases death, shook the world. The first case of the disease in Slovakia was registered in March. The government's response was the immediate introduction of strict measures, which over time only prolonged and get worse due to the country's ongoing negative situation. Each of these restrictions had a significant impact on the tourism sector from the outset. Thousands of employees lost their jobs and the bad situation in many tourism businesses had fatal consequences. But how has this situation affected consumers and their demand for tourism? This article aims to examine the changes in consumer behavior of the Slovak citizens and their demand for tourism in 2020 due to the Global Pandemic COVID-19. The results of the analysis show responses of 270 residents of the Slovak Republic and their demand for tourism before the outbreak of the pandemic and in the ongoing period during the first wave of the pandemic. Based on the comparison of these results were identified changes in the consumer behavior and afterward, there were set recommendations for domestic destination management organizations and other businesses and institutions in the tourism industry in Slovakia.
