Outdoor Geography Education as Part of the Preparation of Future Graduates in the Conditions of Development of the Nitra Geographical Department

Abstract

Outdoor education has an important place not only in geographical education at various levels and types of schools in Slovakia, but also abroad. The issue of outdoor education became even more relevant during the COVID-19 pandemic. Schools have chosen outdoor education as an alternative to overall school closure. In this paper, we deal with the implementation of outdoor geography education in the conditions of the Department of Geography and Regional Development, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra, which has a tradition here since the 60s of the 20th century. Education takes place during university studies in the form of geographical excursions and field practices. The aim of the paper is to characterize the importance or contribution of geography outdoor education not only in terms of improving university studies, but also in terms of the applicability of future geography graduates in the labor market. We deal with the detailed chronological development of the implementation of geographical excursions and field practices since the 90s of the 20th century. Currently, the concept of student centered learning (known as SCL) is applied in the outdoor geography education in the department. In addition to professional specific competences, students also develop transferable competences during this form of education, which are currently required in the labor market, as they increase the employability of graduates in various occupations.
