Abstract

Slovakia is one of the less significant European countries in the viticulture and wine sector. Despite not very suitable climatic conditions for the cultivation of grapevines, it has varied soil and relief conditions which allows to produce quality wines. In this article, we analyzed the position of viticulture and winemaking in Slovakia within the member states of the European Union (EU) after 2004. We introduced the regionalization of viticulture into EU wine-growing zones. Based on selected indicators (area of vineyards, share of vineyard on agricultural land of state, grape production, wine production, share of states in total grape and wine production of the EU, wine consumption per capita), we examined the development of viticulture and winemaking in the EU-27 in the observed years 2004, 2010 and 2019 with focusing on Slovakia. We used several methods in the processing of the monitored issues, such as the method of analysis, comparative, statistical-mathematical, graphic and cartographic. In several indicators, Slovakia reached the 14th position within the EU countries. The best results in the monitored indicators were achieved by Italy, France, Spain, Portugal and Germany.
