Abstract

Cancer is one of the dominant causes of mortality in the Slovak population. We can find geographical differences in the presence of cancer in Slovakia. This means that cancer of different tumor types has a different frequency of occurrence in different regions of Slovakia. Monitoring the development of cancer mortality in Slovakia can be considered a relevant topic of geographical research. Relatively little is known about the geographical distribution of the most common types of cancer in men (prostate, skin, colon, stomach). It can be agreed that if the fight against cancer is to be comprehensive, it must include a spatial aspect, which is best applied in the field of medical geography. In the paper, we assume that cancer of the prostate, skin, colon, and stomach will manifest itself in different intensity, frequency of occurrence as well as spatial differences in the monitored area. The aim of the contribution is to map the occurrence of selected types of cancer from the point of view of the regions and to establish regional disparities in the districts of Slovakia in the period 2000-2020 with an emphasis on the male population. Databases of standardized mortality rates for tumors of the prostate, skin, colon and stomach were used. Cluster analysis was used to evaluate and compare these selected cancer types. It is clear from the results of the analyses that significant disparities still persist between the investigated districts.
