Abstract

Current geography education in Slovakia is based on a classic teaching model, in which the curriculum is taught to students via traditional teaching methods. The transformation of the educational process is taking place gradually, but the biggest trend, in our opinion, is the implementation and use of modern geospatial technologies, which are conveyed to students through inquiry-based teaching. The aim of the paper is to present the inquiry-based model of lesson using the ArcGIS Online application. The part of the study is also the evaluation of a questionnaire survey of the perception of geospatial technologies of geography teacher students at the Faculty of Science of the Pavol Jozef Safarik University in Košice. The results show, that students perceive very positively particularly the technologies, that they can implement in the teaching of geography at primary or secondary schools and use them in reasonable extent. The ArcGIS Online application offers teachers several advantages (free registration, no need to install special software, save work on the server, sharing maps). On the other hand, it also brings several disadvantages, which are described in the article. This article can serve as a valuable source of inspiration for the implementation of modern geospatial technologies in the inquiry-based teaching of geography in Slovakia.
