Abstract

Most dailies in the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic follow the long-standing tradition of publishing daily weather forecasts in the form of meteorological maps. According to the modification of the map, its placement in the newspaper and the accompanying topics around the map, one can judge the fact of the importance individual editors attach to meteorological information. The first simple weather forecast map for Czechoslovakia and Europe appeared in the Rudé Právo newspaper as early as May 2, 1989 (renamed Právo in 1995). Meteomaps publish are published both by "solid” daily newspapers and “tabloids" in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The first of them developed from the originally highly professionally conceived maps to a more reader-acceptable pictorial concept with only certain professional elements (e. g. Lidové noviny and Právo in the Czech Republic, Pravda and SME in Slovakia). They are placed in different parts of the issue and surrounded by news from politics, economics and culture (including TV station programs and horoscopes, crosswords and sudoku). Tabloids in the Czech Republic and Slovakia usually prefer a simple design of maps and similar accompaniment supplemented by news from the society or advertising (even erotic).
