Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected every sector of the economy around the world, including retail. Various measures have been taken by the government to prevent or slow down the spread of the novel COVID-19 virus. One of the first measures taken concerned retail, which was considered as a risky environment for people. These measures disrupted normal consumer behavior and changed the redistribution of sales in different sectors of retail, including food retail. The aim of this paper is to analyze the impact of the measures taken regarding retail (focus on the food retail sector) by using data from the eKasa system in regional cities in Slovakia. The results indicate that the COVID-19 pandemic had a negative impact on the sales in food retail in Slovakia. These negative changes have their regional specificities. Based on the analysis, food retail in Trnava and Bratislava was relatively less affected by the pandemic than other regions, but Nitra, Žilina and Prešov were the most affected.
