Abstract
In this paper, we focus on the current development of alpine lakes in the area of The High Tatras which represent one of the important geomorpho-hydrology phenomena of the mountain area. Recently, the development of alpine lakes has been influenced by processes of debris deposition and siltation due to morphodynamic processes, such as rock falls and toppling, debris flows, the nivational processes like avalanches, and processes associated with fluvial and proluvial accumulation. This paper aims to show the connection between water-gravity processes and the current climate evolution in the conditions of the highest mountain range of the Western Carpathians. The occurrence and frequency of morphodynamic processes of 31 selected high mountain lakes of the Slovak part of the Tatra Mountains were investigated. In all, 98 debris flow in the coastal zone of the lakes were recorded, practically from the Montane to the Alpine vegetation stage. These data will be used for the evaluation of alpine lakes according to the potential of deposition and to attempt to classify them according to relevant criteria.
