Abstract

Current studies revealed and explored spatial patterns of migration that emerged in the central European post-socialist countries during the post-socialist transition and after it. The research in these countries, including Slovakia, is focused on the one hand on metropolitan and on the other hand on peripheral regions. However, research on other regions, even those of larger towns, is overshadowed by the focus on metropolitan regions. This paper addresses performance of the Nitra functional urban region (FUR) in the regional system of Slovakia. Nitra, as the county capital, can be considered a centre of the second hierarchical category after Bratislava and Košice. The aim of the paper is to reveal its position regarding intraregional and interregional migration processes as well as process of selective migration by educational attainment, which indicate its ability to attract human capital. The results show concentration of population to the region, which means the Nitra FUR meets the expectations arising from its location in developed western Slovakia and from having one of the largest towns in Slovakia as a region´s core. However, the intensity of concentration has been recently stagnating or even declining. The regional human capital even suffered from the deconcentration of population with tertiary education.
