Abstract

There is no study in Slovakia that would map the current state of unused areas and buildings. The emergence of brownfields in Slovakia in the last three decades was influenced by two events: the transformation of the economy and Slovakia's entry into the European Union. The aim of the contribution was to identify brownfields in the Nitra district and focus primarily on the localization of agricultural brownfields in individual municipalities of the district. The observed district belongs to the Nitra region, which is the most agriculturally used region of Slovakia. To achieve the goal, we mainly used the field research method, including techniques such as observation, interviews with municipal office workers, owners of brownfield sites, residents of municipalities, and the collection of photo-documentary material. We identified 63 brownfields in the municipalities of the Nitra district. Due to the agricultural nature of the district, agricultural brownfields prevail, we identified 34 of them in 28 municipalities. Brownfields of the brownfield type as an area of unused farm buildings prevailed, which are a remnant of declining livestock production in Slovakia. Brownfield as an object occurred less, in the sense that it used to be a granary, a mill or an administrative building. We found that revitalizing agricultural brownfields is outstandingly difficult in the given area.
