Abstract
Betting is a form of gambling where winning depends on guessing the outcome of a sporting or non-sporting betting event or related circumstance. In this study, we examine three betting companies that operate brick-and-mortar betting offices (sportsbooks) in Slovakia – Fortuna, Niké and Tipsport. The aim of this paper is to identify the regularities of the spatial distribution of betting offices in Slovakia, and to point out new trends in betting. Using a questionnaire survey, we examined the views of municipal representatives (mayors) on the presence of a betting office in the municipality, as well as the positive and negative features of their presence in the municipality. We obtained data on the spatial distribution of individual betting offices directly from the betting companies. The results show that the location of offices is influenced by the size of the population living in the municipality, the tourist attractiveness of the locality (e.g. spas, water parks, ski resorts, etc.), as well as the importance of the municipality as a commuting center. The questionnaire survey revealed that negative attitudes of mayors towards the presence of betting offices in their municipality prevail.
