Position of Slovakia in European Union Fruit Production

Abstract

Fruit production in Slovakia was affected not only by the transformation of the economy in the 1990s but also by the country's accession to European structures in 2004. Slovakia has favourable natural conditions and a long tradition of fruit-growing. The aim of our study was to analyse the position of Slovakia within the European Union (EU) based on the development of fruit production. In the study, we analysed the following indicators: the fruit production of the state and the share of the state in the total EU production in the period 2016 – 2022. The development of the area of fruit orchards and fruit production in Slovakia was monitored in the period 2009 – 2022. In the article, standard methods and techniques based on comparative analysis of multi-year data related to fruit production and the area of fruit orchards and cartographic representation of the issue were used. We also visualised the data and findings from several statistical sources graphically. Despite a 2 % decrease in fruit production across the EU, fruit production in the largest fruit producers, such as Italy, Poland, and Greece, increased slightly during the period under review. On the positive side, fruit production increased more in countries with lower overall production. The largest fruit producers in 2022 also achieved the highest share of production in total EU fruit production. The share of Slovakia in total EU fruit production is very low, less than 0,5 %. The average annual fruit production area in Slovakia for the period 2009 – 2022 was 4 758,98 ha. On average, 42 381,07 tonnes of fruit were produced annually in the examined period.
