Abstract

This paper examines the intensifying geopolitical rivalry between the United States and China in the Pacific region, with a focus on the strategic initiatives pursued by both powers and their articulation in the realms of diplomacy and security policy. Particular emphasis is placed on the unprecedented high-level visits of U.S. officials to Pacific Island states in recent years, interpreted as responses to China’s developmental and diplomatic engagement, as well as its signals of intent to establish a military presence in the region. Drawing on an analysis of foreign policy and economic indicators, the study delineates the spheres of influence of both actors. The findings indicate that competition is especially pronounced in states such as Kiribati, the Solomon Islands, Tonga, and Vanuatu. Furthermore, the evolving geopolitical dynamics in the Pacific are shown to contribute to the emergence of new security alignments and to the ongoing transformation of the balance of power across the Indo-Pacific.
