Abstract
Historical maps belong to a particular category of geographic data. The paper discusses how to use two types of history of maps: maps for calculating cubature of water reservoirs from different period and historical aerial photographs from 1949 to study the changes in water reservoirs near Banská Štiavnica and their proximity - riparian zone and their own watershed. The results document their extensive applicability in analyzing the causes and consequences of erosion activity as an important environmental factor that significantly affects the water reservoirs. At last they can be used in description of changes in ecological characteristics and ecological stratification such as littoral, sublittoral and profundal zone.
