Project description
The results of the knowledge of the past talks about the fact that the core of the Great Moravian Empire was located in the present border area between the Slovak and the Czech Republic in the Lower Morava River Region where numerous artifacts, proving the existence of the empire, were found. This historic area (Mikulčice - Kopčany) represents an unique cross-border region that have applied to be entered on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage. This area was not given sufficient attention from the natural science research point of view. Our project proposes geographic landscape research on the based of the analysis of historical maps, which may bring considerable number of key evidence on the missing natural and economic structure of the landscape in the study the area during the Great Moravia period. Based on joint evaluation of these antique maps we can also come to further clarify of the concept and former condition of the area which could be its heritage today. This issue is essential for the definition and management of the planned cross-border protected area of UNESCO.
Joint research will be carried out on the basis of the mobility of researchers from universities in Brno (CZ) and Nitra (SK). These cities are 70 km long distance from this research border area. The output will be also joint papers published in scientific proceeding and on the project website. The project also aims at continuation of the cooperation development between the project V4 partners.
The results of the project are also intended for the general public, not only for professionals since they can contribute significantly to better knowing of the border area with respect to the historical heritage as well as for the benefit of definition and future management of the UNESCO World Monument.
The aim of the project is to promote closer cooperation among V4 countries (Slovakia and Czech Republic) via joint scientific research and mobility in the border area. The part of the project will be a joint scientific conference and workshop dedicated to the research results of the project. The project also aims at continuation of the cooperation development between the project partners. The study area has the cross-border character and its fate is planned within the framework of international cooperation (UNESCO). The necessary documents are filed separately in the national resources of the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Only with the combination of these data by national experts who have professional background, it is possible to achieve high quality and reliable research results.
Benefits of the project can be seen in the intensification of scientific cooperation between the both V4 countries (Slovakia and Czech Republic) via joint scientific research in the border area (which have applied to be entered on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage) as well as mobility of researchers from 2 universities (Brno, Nitra). The final part of the project will be a joint scientific conference dedicated to the research results. The results of the project are also intended for the general public, not only for citizens of the research border area or professionals (scientific researchers, teachers etc.).
Expected outputs
- obtaining the image of the Great Moravian heritage in the present natural landscape structure; what natural objects and shapes preserved from the existence of the Great Moravia in the studied borderland which was once part of one common state.
- the results could significantly enrich the existing knowledge of the study area which is based on the integration, analysis and synthesis of spatial knowledge.
- it offers the possibility of synthetic linking of natural science knowledge with archeology and history, which is in the case of the sites under the auspices of UNESCO a rare exception.
- the research results of the border area will be presented at the joint conference and published in a scientific journal or proceeding (the contributions will have approximately 50 pages and 250 copies.
Planned PR activities
Part of the research will also be the media outputs published in the form of press reports as well as on the website set up specifically for this project. During the research, the joint conference and workshops in Brno (September 2013), Bratislava (November 2013) and in Brno (February 2014) is planned in order to present the research results. The results will be then published in the form of scientific papers in the publication (proceedings) including acknowledgments for funding and support from the Visegrad Fund and also on the other websites (project website, universities and other institutions which are interested in these results).
Continuation of the project
The cross-border cooperation will continue in the future. Brno city (CZ) and Nitra city (SK) are 70 km long distance from this research border area. We will continue in the starting research as well as in the exchange of researchers between the partners of the project. The output will be joint papers in scientific journals and also published on the website and other print media in both countries. The implementation of other joint conferences and workshops as well as joint research projects is also planned in order to intensify cooperation between the partner countries.
Expected results
The project will be considered successful if the following will be fulfilled:
- to intensify scientific cooperation between the both V4 countries in the cross-border area via a joint research based on the mobilities,
- to identify, on the basis of cartographic documents and joint field research, preserved natural objects and shapes from the period of the Great Moravian Empire,
- to carry out the conference and workshop with the presentation of obtained results,
- to inform the wider public with the project results through papers published in the journal or book and also on the project website,
- to declare the studied cross-border area of both V4 countries as a part of the UNESCO World Heritage List.
