Abstract

The paper presents a knowledge of the specificity of public transport in the municipalities of the Nitra region (NR) in 2024. At the same time, the goal is also to determine the most advantageous method of public passenger transport for specific residents of the municipalities who do not have the possibility of transportation by car. We see the importance of the study on two levels, both for the needs of the emerging integrated transport system and as part of the project base for regional development management. In most municipalities of the NR, public bus transport prevails as the most suitable mode of transport, where the value for NR in bus transport reached 64.41%. Public train transport in NR accounts for just under 11.30% and combined transport reached 23.45% in the Nitra Region. From this result, we can see that NR is significantly oriented towards public bus transport, followed by combined transport and train transport, which lags behind in most parts.

Abstract

Slovakia, Europe, and the world are currently undergoing numerous changes, bringing various social, economic, and environmental challenges. Some of these changes have been occurring gradually over a long period, while others are rapid and have emerged only in recent years. The dynamics of these changes significantly affects whether they can be addressed within the geography curriculum and textbooks. We believe that school-level regional geography holds great potential for fostering a holistic understanding of complex phenomena and processes in the world and is a subject that should respond appropriately to current issues in Europe. However, based on an analysis of the geography curriculum, textbooks, and personal experience, we can conclude that such a response is currently taking place only to a very limited extent. There are several reasons for this, with one of the most critical being the rapid dynamics of these topics, which require continuous supplementation and updating of traditional educational materials. As part of the KEGA project, we developed an interactive textbook titled Current Issues of Europe. Its purpose is to complement the traditionally covered content of Europe’s regional geography with current topics and case studies. The textbook is primarily intended for high school students and their teachers. The goal of this paper is to present the textbook in terms of its creation, content, and potential applications.

Abstract

This paper focuses on the effectiveness of the Height Above the Nearest Drainage (HAND) model with the integration of detailed Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data and geographic information systems (GIS) to compute the fluvial flood hazard maps in the Gidra River Basin, western Slovakia. Study area, which is characterized by a wide variety of terrain forms including valleys, hills or lowland, serves as an ideal case study for creating the HAND model. Our approach uses GIS tools to develop digital elevation model (DEM)-based factors crucial for creating the HAND model, such as stream network, flow direction and flow accumulation rasters. Based on the HAND model, it is possible to derive flood-prone areas for any observed water stage measured at gauging stations or with the use of synthetic rating curves for any cross section on the river. This paper aims at outlining the usefulness of GIS and detailed DEM data to produce the HAND model, which is then applied for rapid creation of fluvial flood hazard maps.

Abstract

The territory of the Czech Republic belongs to the traditional and, in the past, the most important production and export areas of beet sugar in the world. The cultivation of sugar beet has significantly changed the landscape of warm climatic regions. From the middle of the 19th century suitable plain areas of meadows and forests were plowed very quickly. Sugar mills and their accompanying infrastructure were built on the outskirts of towns and villages or in the open countryside (a total of almost 400 sugar factories in the territory of present Czech Republic). The needs of the sugar mills motivated the engineering industry to produce machinery and the mining industry to extract used raw materials. The contribution aims to present a maximally objective method of searching for sugar production landscapes of the past and present according to specific criteria supported by spatial data. On the one hand, these are based on natural conditions suitable for sugar beet cultivation, verified areas of past and present beet cultivation and locations of all documented sugar mills, including knowledge of the length of their period of influence on the surrounding landscape. With the assistance of GIS technology, the likely areas of occurrence of the sugar mill landscapes throughout the territory of the Czech Republic were identified, including the determination of the length of the period of their influence on the surroundings. Subsequent field research will look for other indications of the sugar mill landscape in the pre-selected area. These will be used to specify the territory of historical and recent sugar mill landscapes.
